On the Thermal Resilience of Venetian Open Spaces

Venice is known for its urban heritage fragility. The city experiencing an increase in yearly average temperatures affecting outdoor–indoor comfort and energy expenditure. Owing to existing literature demonstrating how local microclimate depends on density, form, materials, this investigation studies the influence of changing climate Venetian vernacular open spaces, as Campi. Based comparison contemporary weather Intergovernmental Panel Climate Change’s (IPCC) future predictions 2050 scenario, highlights Campi’s spaces surrounding buildings, canals, green public areas contribute building resilience. By employing advanced modelling, study analyses outdoor with respect users’ perception Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET). ENVI-met tool used simulate thermal behaviour two representative Campi: SS. Giovanni e Paolo S. Polo. Despite significant temperature growths, fabric characteristics seem play a crucial role strengthening resilience thus preserving quality warmer future. analysis shows historical matrix buildings cooperate.
